'TEAM WORK’: Developing European Professional Training in Chamber Music
Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences / School of Music and its partner schools are organising a Pedagogic Chamber Music Conference in co-operation with the ERASMUS Thematic Network for Music ’Polifonia’ and the European Association of Conservatoires (AEC).

Content and purpose of the seminar
Chamber music can have positive effects on professional music training at large with pedagogical, artistic and financial benefits. Chamber music performance and teaching plays an important role in the transmission of western art music traditions to new generations and is one of the most effective tools in community-music making. As a result, chamber music can also contribute to an increased employability of musicians. Until now, the potential of these positive effects has not been fully exploited due to a lack of an efficient organisation of chamber music education in professional music training institutions.

In a first attempt to address this situation, chamber music teachers from six European professional music training institutions worked together for three years (2001-2004) with the intention to create a European curriculum for chamber music in higher music education. While working on this assignment, the group realised that curriculum structures in the different institutions were widely diverse, but by using a learning outcomes-based approach with the help of the learning outcomes developed by the European Association of Conservatoires (AEC), it was possible to shift the focus from structures to the pedagogical processes and educational outcomes. The purpose was not to reinvent existing training, but to improve music training providing students with the skills and competences they need in the modern music profession through a stronger focus on chamber music.

During the seminar, issues related to chamber music teaching at professional music training level and to the professional world of chamber music will be presented and discussed through the below listed topics:

 

Topics

  • The professional integration of new chamber music ensembles 
  • An ‘ideal’ (European) chamber music curriculum model, making use of the latest pedagogical tools and concepts developed in the ‘Polifonia’ project, such as learning outcomes and competences 
  • Practical workshops on various topics, such as pedagogic chamber music repertoire for pre-college level, stage fright and mental performance practising 
  • The Virtual Library of the Kuhmo Chamber Music Centre 
  • The creation of the European Chamber Music Teachers Association (ECMTA) 
  • Student workshops and master classes with leading chamber music professors from various European countries
